When we set out to build StreetSignal, we had one goal: give people moving to Cape Town honest, comprehensive neighbourhood data before they commit to a lease or purchase.

The Problem We’re Solving

Every year, thousands of people relocate to Cape Town. They research online, visit a few areas, and make life-changing decisions with incomplete information. Estate agents show the best sides; crime forums amplify fear. Neither tells the full story.

Our Data Sources

We aggregate data from multiple official sources:

Census Data

  • Census 2022 projections for population estimates
  • Census 2011 for historical demographic context
  • City of Cape Town Household Survey 2024 for service delivery metrics

Public Safety

  • SAPS crime statistics (2023/2024 reporting period)
  • Police station coverage assignments
  • Fire station proximity and classifications

Education & Healthcare

  • Western Cape Education Department school registry
  • Public clinics and hospitals from the City of Cape Town
  • Private hospital locations

Transport

  • MyCiTi bus routes and stops
  • Metrorail stations and lines
  • Golden Arrow bus routes
  • Minibus taxi route data

Municipal Services

  • Load shedding schedules by block
  • Dam level trends (city-wide)
  • Parks and recreation facilities

What Makes Us Different

Unlike property portals that cherry-pick data, we show everything—the good and the challenging. If a suburb has high crime but excellent schools, we show both. If it has no public transport but great parks, you’ll see that too.

Every data point includes:

  • Source attribution with links
  • Methodology notes explaining any limitations
  • Data freshness dates so you know how current it is

Looking Ahead

We’re continuously improving StreetSignal. Coming soon:

  • Historical crime trend visualizations
  • School performance data integration
  • Community-contributed local insights
